Life is an adventure. It is full of surprises, wonders and miracles. It contains fascinating events and marvelous stories that keep you in awe. Stories of human survival are no different. To live through the hardest moments one can imagine, one must have a will of huge magnitude and desire to live. If the person wills it beyond all else, he can fight through all odds.Here is the list of some of the most amazing survivals.
1. Plane Crash and 72 days of survival
On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes. The plane was carrying 45 people. The passengers also included a rugby team and their families. Their struggle for survival lasted for 72 days. In the end only 16 were rescued. The rescuer was down on December 23, 1972. Only 10 people died in the crash. Tough weather conditions, shortage of food and a killing avalanche were the reason of death of many. As the days went by, the search for the passengers was abandoned and the victims heard the news themselves on the radio. They later had to eat the preserved dead passengers to survive the horror that was Andes. Nando Parrado and Robert Canessa later travelled for 12 days before they found a Chilean huaso and alerted the authorities. South Americans still call the flight ‘the miracle in Andes’.
2. Baby with a rare tumor born twice
Macie Hope McCartney survived a dangerous tumor that inflicts 1 in 35,000 babies. It was during her mother’s pregnancy that doctors discovered that the child had a tumor of the size of the grapefruit. The tumor was also stopping the blood flow and weakening the heart. The doctors operated the mother, cut open her abdomen, removed the tumor from the baby and then put her back in her mother’s womb. There were no complications until the mother gave birth.
3. The man who survived 27 days of dirt and ashes
Khaleed Hussain, a 20 year old farmer was trapped and pinned under his own house after the October 8 earthquake in Pakistan. He had to remain in the painful position for 27 days before help reached him. He could only move his right arm during the ordeal. He was found alive on November 10 by a young man with a leg broken in several places.
4. Survivor of Lightning and a Plane crash
Julian Koepcke, daughter of a biologist, was the only survivor among the 93 passengers of the LANSA Flight 508. Still trapped to her seat, she was blown off her airplane when lightning struck it. She landed some 2 miles away from the crash-site. With an injured eye, broken collar bone and cuts and bruises, she had to trek for 9 days until she found a cabin and tended to her wounds. She then had to wait for help to reach her. She became a zoologist later on.
5. The Man Who got cut into Two Pieces
In the June of 2006, Truman Duncan, a railroad switchman was working at his job in the rail yards of Cleburne, Texas when he met the accident. He slipped and fell onto the tracks. Although he made an effort to not get run over by the train, he got caught in the undercarriage and was run over by steel wheels that were supporting 20,000 pounds of dead weight. He got entangled in the wheels and the train dragged him 75 feet before leaving him behind. His body was cut into half. The accident took his legs, kidney and pelvis. He had to wait for 45 minutes until help came from 911 on his won call. He went through 23 surgeries and lived to tell the tale.
6. Survivor of Eight Deadliest Accidents
Some consider him the luckiest man on the planet. Frank Salek is a Croatian Music Teacher and he cannot travel in plane, bus or train. The reason for such inhibition is his accidental history. He survived train derailment, bus crash, a blown out door in an airplane, his car catching fire while he was driving. He even once drove off a mountain road and landed in a tree. His car could not survive and went down another 300 feet and met an explosion.
7. Delivery during brain Surgery
Yulia Shumakova, a 24 year old Russian girl was brought to a hospital one day when she fainted after returning from work. The doctors diagnosed her to be suffering from a dangerous seizure in her brain and told her husband that the chances of her survival were pretty slim. What added more to her critical condition was her 32 week pregnancy. Yulia was one of the only 4% of patients who survive such diseases. Even her baby got lucky. Though born prematurely, her son survived.
8. The man who survived 9 bullets
Francisco I. Madero led the 7 years long Mexican Revolution. On March 18, 1915 a man performed a miracle that had never been seen before. His name was Wenselao Moguel and was captured and sentenced to death by a firing squad without even a trial. The squad shot him nine times. To ensure his death, a soldier even fired through his head and face from close range. He still survived and lived a lively and energetic life.
9. Aron Ralston’s Survival
While mountaineering in Utah, Aron Lee Ralston got his arm trapped under a huge boulder. He had to amputate it himself to get free. It all happened on April 2003. He was climbing in Canyonlands National park in southeaster Utah when a 800 pound boulder fell on his right arm. No one knew of his hiking plans which meant there will not be help coming to him. Aron remained pinned there for four days until he ran out of water. As an extreme measure, he started drinking his own urine. Aron even carved his name, date of birth and presumed date of death into the sandstone canyon wall. He still has the recording in which he recorded his last goodbyes to his family. When he was about to die, he decided to take one final step. He struggled with his arm until he broke his arm. He then cut his arm from one end to the other with a dull knife. His ordeal was not yet over. He then walked down a 65 foot wall and alerted the authorities. He was finally rescued by a helicopter search team. His arm was found alter on and cremated.
10. The metallic Model
Katrina Burgess sure is beautiful but her life experiences may not be so. Charming and beautiful, her body is held together by a total of 10 metallic rods. She broke her neck, back and ribs, injured her pelvis and punctured her lungs in a drastic accident that changed her life altogether. Her car crashed into a ditched after it got skewed off the M5 while going at the speed of 70 mph. The doctors had to insert a metallic rod from her hip to her knee and secure it with titanium pins on the day she got to the hospital. After a week they moved to slice open her back and insert six more rods. Another week went by and she got a titanium screw in her back to support her neck. The model suffered 5 moths of excruciating agony until she could leave her pills.
